Huaguoyuan Guiyang: Exploring China's Largest Apartment Complex
Inside China’s Largest Concrete Jungle Apartment, Where 500,000 People Live
Destination:ChinaProvince:GuizhouCity:Guiyang
Inside China’s largest concrete jungle apartment complex, home to 500,000 people — the Huaguoyuan Community in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province. World’s biggest and most crowded residential area, it has over 300 high-rise buildings, mostly 40+ floors, covering 10 sq km (4 sq miles).
Once China’s largest slum, it was redeveloped into a modern complex with parks, schools, hospitals, public transport, and shops. The dense towers stand so close sunlight barely reaches the ground.
I visited with a local girl, Yang. We explored the buildings, met residents, tried local food, and saw daily life inside this massive concrete jungle — small spaces, cheap prices, and a strong community in world’s most packed neighborhoods.
